Lore & Background

When the Radiance's influence spread too far, infecting the minds of the kingdom's citizens with visions and madness, the Pale King sought a solution in the darkness beneath his throne. He discovered the Void, an ancient and formless substance that predated the Light. From this primordial shadow, he shaped hollow constructs without internal organs or bones, intended to be perfect vessels for containment. The process was one of isolation and purity. The Vessels were raised in silence within the Abyss, kept away from the world above to prevent contamination by emotion or thought. However, the nature of life proved difficult to suppress entirely. Many of these creations began to feel pain, fear, and desire, proving they could not remain truly hollow. These flawed vessels were deemed failures. Notably, the Pure Vessel—the one chosen by the Pale King—was itself imperfect due to a bond formed with its creator. In the Dream No More ending, the Knight does not contain the Radiance but sacrifices itself to destroy it; the Knight's own hollowness remains ambiguous and is not confirmed by canon.

In Their Own Story

The air in the Abyss is cold and still, smelling only of old dust and deep water. A pale figure stands before a pool of black liquid that ripples without wind. From the darkness, shapes begin to rise—smooth carapaces forming around empty cores. They stand motionless, waiting for command. One by one, their faces are masked with white porcelain, hiding any expression they might possess. The Pale King watches them, seeking a mind that does not think. He finds only silence in most, but whispers of thought linger in the others. In this deep dark, a choice is made among the shadows. One remains hollow enough to bear the burden.

Reader's Guide

The creation began when the Great Infection threatened to consume Hallownest entirely. The Pale King turned away from the Light and sought power in the Void below. He crafted numerous Vessels intended to hold the Radiance within their bodies, acting as a seal against the corruption spreading through the kingdom. However, the process was imperfect; most vessels developed feelings and thoughts over time. These flawed creations were cast aside into the Abyss or destroyed to prevent them from failing in their duty. Eventually, one Vessel was selected as the perfect candidate to hold the infection indefinitely. This chosen vessel was taken to the Temple of the Black Egg and sealed there with a nail through its mask. The plan succeeded for centuries, delaying the inevitable collapse of the kingdom until the seal finally weakened.

Did You Know?

• Failed Vessels can still be encountered wandering the Abyss in their broken forms.
• The Dream No More ending involves the Knight sacrificing itself to destroy the Radiance, not containing it; the Knight's hollowness is ambiguous and debated among fans.
• Vessels are made of Void and described as empty or hollow; lore consistently states they lack soul, mind, and will. Any SOUL they use in gameplay is drawn from external sources, not their own.
• Vessel masks vary: the Hollow Knight's mask is intact, the Knight's has a crack, and other Vessels in the Abyss have different mask shapes—they are not all identical to the Pale King's chosen successor.
