In Their Own Story

The air in Deepnest is thick with spores and the scent of rot, but inside the small stone alcove, the smell is sharp—sulfur, hot iron, and old dust. The Nailsmith does not look up as the Knight approaches, their hammer falling with a steady, hypnotic rhythm against the anvil. Sparks fly, illuminating the shadowed face for a split second before vanishing into the gloom again. 'The metal sings,' the smith murmurs, voice raspy like grinding stones. 'It knows it is not enough yet.' They pause, lifting a glowing shard of Geo from the Knight's pouch. With a final, resonant strike, the Nail hums with renewed power, ready to cleave through the darkness once more.

Reader's Guide

The Nailsmith is found in a small cave chamber within Deepnest, accessible only after acquiring the Desolate Dive or Mothwing Cloak. This non-combat NPC serves as the exclusive source for upgrading the Knight's Nail throughout the game. To interact with them, the player must approach their anvil and select 'Upgrade' from the menu. The smith requires a specific amount of Geo to perform each enhancement, increasing the damage output significantly at every stage. There are four total upgrades available, culminating in the final form known as the Shaded Nail. Unlike hostile enemies, the Nailsmith poses no threat and cannot be attacked. Their dialogue is minimal but changes slightly depending on which upgrade tier has been reached, offering brief commentary on the weapon's state. Players should ensure they have sufficient Geo before entering Deepnest, as backtracking to collect more can be dangerous due to the area's aggressive fauna.
