Before the Infection, Hallownest was a utopia of order and silence, ruled by the Pale King. However, the kingdom's citizens harbored deep-seated fears that eventually coalesced into the Radiance, a being of pure light born from their collective consciousness. When the Pale King attempted to seal this entity away using the Void, the seal fractured under the pressure of the Radiance's power, causing it to leak out as a physical corruption. The resulting plague spread rapidly, bypassing the kingdom's defenses and infecting its people. Unlike typical diseases, the Infection does not just kill; it rewrites the host's mind, forcing them into a state of frenzied aggression. The infected lose all memory of their former lives, becoming hollow shells that serve only the Radiance's will to expand and consume everything in its path.

In Their Own Story

The air in the Deepnest tastes of rot and old rain. A small beetle scuttles across the damp stone, its shell once a vibrant blue, now streaked with pulsating yellow veins. It pauses, twitching violently as a spore drifts down from the ceiling, landing softly on its antennae. Within moments, the beetle's eyes widen, glowing with an unnatural, blinding luminescence. It lets out a high-pitched shriek that echoes through the cavern, joining the chorus of thousands of others lost to the light.

The history of Hallownest is inextricably linked to the rise and fall of its defenses against the Infection. Initially, the kingdom flourished under the Pale King, who discovered a way to channel the Void into living vessels capable of containing the Radiance's influence. This peace was fragile, however, as the citizens' fears continued to feed the entity trapped beneath the city. When the seal finally broke, the Infection erupted from the depths, turning the kingdom against itself. The Pale King's greatest creation, the Vessels, were meant to be immune, but the corruption found a way to breach even their minds. This led to a desperate war where the kingdom's guardians fought not just an enemy, but their own people twisted into monsters. The tragedy culminated in the fall of the Pale King and the abandonment of the city. The Infection spread unchecked, consuming the forests, the cities, and the very history of the realm, leaving behind a graveyard of light and madness waiting for a new vessel to finish what was started.
