Lore & Background

Long ago, Hallownest was a beacon of unity for bugkind under the guidance of the Pale King. The civilization flourished until the Radiance, an ancient moth deity of pure light that had been forgotten due to the Pale King's rule, reasserted its influence, driving its followers into madness. The King attempted to seal this threat away using the Void and created Vessels from the Void to contain the Radiance itself. Despite these measures, the Hollow Knight was imperfect, causing the Radiance to leak out and consume the kingdom. Order collapsed as bugs turned feral or became twisted by the Light's influence. The once-great cities now stand silent, their streets filled with corrupted spirits and remnants of a desperate war that was lost before it truly began. Today, Hallownest exists as a graveyard of memories. Ghosts of the past linger in every corridor, whispering warnings to those who dare walk its paths. The Knight arrives not just to explore these ruins, but to confront the cycle of decay and defeat the Radiance or accept the Void's power.

In Their Own Story

Rain falls softly upon the stone plaza, echoing against the high arches. The Knight pauses, mask reflecting the grey sky above. Distant whispers echo from the walls, remnants of a forgotten song sung by those who lost their minds long ago. A lone lantern flickers in the wind, casting long shadows against the crumbling masonry. Silence hangs heavy here, broken only by the drip of water and the rustle of decay. It is a kingdom waiting to be remembered, or finally laid to rest.

Reader's Guide

Hallownest serves as the central hub and primary dungeon for the player's journey. It is a vast, interconnected network of biomes ranging from fungal forests to frozen peaks. Each area tells part of the kingdom's tragic history through environmental storytelling rather than direct exposition. Navigating this realm requires mastery of movement abilities to unlock new paths. The layout encourages exploration and backtracking as tools are gained. This structure mirrors the Knight's growing power against the encroaching darkness that plagues every corner. Resting spots known as benches allow for recovery and saving progress throughout the kingdom. The setting matters because it embodies the consequences of failed hubris. Every ruin hints at a glorious past lost to the Infection. Understanding Hallownest is key to comprehending the fate of the Vessels and the Pale King's desperate attempt to save his people from eternal madness. The kingdom itself acts as a character, decaying alongside its inhabitants.
